Introduction

During Spring-Summer 2009, CIRCE will carry out several cetaceans land-based surveys. The surveys will focus on the following species fin, sperm and killer whales that will be spotted from a few observation stations in the Strait of Gibraltar and la Janda.

The volunteering programs are the following:

- 15 March-30 May 2009 : Conservation of the killer whales in South of Spain, from Barbate (Cádiz)

- 31 May-1 August 2009 : Conservation of large whales (fin and sperm whales) in the Strait of Gibraltar, from Tarifa (Cádiz)

In 2009, about 100 volunteers are excepted to take part in the surveys, coming from different parts of Spain, Europe and the rest of the world. The volunteers will learn how to identify and land-track the different species of whales inhabiting the Strait of Gibraltar and Gulf of Cadiz, and will receive lectures on these species' ecology as well as their conservation status in the area.

The surveys will be carried out by the researchers Pauline Gauffier and Ruth Esteban (who are we?), with the help of groups of 7 volunteers per week.

All the positions for the 2009 surveys are full. However, if you want to act toward the conservation of the cetaceans living in the Strait of Gibraltar and come onboard our research vessel Elsa with CIRCE's researchers, you can take part in the field course of the research assistant program.
